Laurie Jones – Musical Director

Laurie Jones is the Musical Director and founder of the award-winning Malmesbury Choir. The choir was established when Laurie was invited to form a new mixed-voice ensemble in Malmesbury, and under his direction it has flourished over the past 13 years, earning numerous accolades for its outstanding performances — including trophies at the Mid-Somerset, Swindon, and Wootton Bassett Music Festivals.

Laurie is also the Musical Director of the City of Bath Male Choir, one of the leading male voice choirs in the UK. The choir has performed across the world and was originally founded by Laurie’s father, Grenville Jones. Laurie’s connection with the group runs deep — he was once a member himself before stepping into the role of Musical Director.

With more than 20 years of experience as a professional musician and conductor, Laurie holds degrees in both percussion and classical singing. His early career as a professional performer and teacher saw him build a strong reputation across the South West, performing in many of the UK’s most prestigious venues, including in London’s West End.

In 2009, Laurie moved into secondary education, becoming Head of Music at Abbeywood Community School, where he led the department for six years. He is now Director of Music at Westonbirt School, where he continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of young musicians.

Laurie’s lifelong passion for singing naturally led him to choral conducting. Over the past 13 years, he has directed a wide range of choirs, from youth ensembles to community groups. Alongside his work with the Malmesbury and City of Bath choirs, Laurie also collaborates with his father, leading the Good Afternoon Choirs — a national network of community choirs for retired singers.
